(in other words, don't assume...) That can be extremely tricky. Big Queer Blog has a post (What Else Could I Say?) that I appreciated, about assuming that everyone is gay. Doing this really changes your view of people you don't know, and your perception of their relations to each other :). It's a fun read. (And fun activity!)
One of the questions addressed in the post was whether there is anything wrong about assuming that everyone is gay. And the obvious answer is provided; assuming everyone is gay is no worse than assuming everyone is straight. Even though there are probably more straight-identified people than non-straight-identified people, this makes sense to me. (Just because your assumption is a little less likely, doesn't make it any more wrong to assume, does it? Certainly not this in itself...).
When someone makes a heterocentric remark about me, I cringe. I hate when people assume I'm straight or normatively gendered. It puts me into rebel mode :).
Oh well.
